I recently saw online a list of 70 questions to ask a film buff, and while I’ve primarily dedicated this blog to music writing, film is my primary passion, and I thought it both a good way for me to think about the movies I’ve seen, and a nice way for readers to get to know me and my tastes.
- Favourite action movie? Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
- What movies could you watch over and over again and not get tired of? I like my movie franchises; Star Wars, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings are always a lot of fun.
- Any old school favourites (Pre-1970)? 12 Angry Men (1957). I need to watch more old films.
- Top 5 directors? David Fincher, Wes Anderson, Danny Boyle, Quentin Tarantino, Nicolas Winding Refn. In no particular order, though Fincher is my favourite.
- Favourite dead actor/actress? Robin Williams.
- Favourite movie from the 1990s? Se7en (1995), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), or Trainspotting (1996). I can’t choose just one, the 90s were a great decade for films.
- Ever been/are you such a hardcore fan of an actor or actress you watched/will watch any movie they were/will be in? Yes, lots. Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Pitt – just off the top of my head.
- What movie are you looking forward to coming out the most? The Disaster Artist (2017).
- Pixar or Dreamworks? Pixar all the way.
- Favourite animated movie? Spirited Away (2001).
- Favourite musical? La La Land (2016).
- Are you against book-to-movie adaptations? Not if they’re done well, but I do wish Hollywood took more risks on original ideas.
- Your guilty pleasure movie(s)? 21 Jump Street (2012) and 22 Jump Street (2014).
- Robin Williams or Eddie Murphy? Williams, without a doubt.
- Favourite chick flick? 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) or Love Actually (2003).
- Ever watched a movie just because you heard the effects were awesome? Fairly certain that’s why I watched Avatar (2009).
- Favourite indie film? The Dreamers (2003) or Enemy (2013), though I’m not sure if they qualify as Indie.
- Favourite movie heroine? Princess Leia or Ellen Ripley, of Star Wars and Aliens respectively.
- Favourite movie action hero? Rorschach from Watchmen (2009).
- Ever read a book so you could understand the movie? No.
- Favourite kids movie? Toy Story 2 (1999).
- Favourite Disney movie? Treasure Planet (2002).
- Favourite movie soundtrack? Drive (2011).
- Movie that makes you cry every-time? Dead Poet’s Society (1989).
- VHS, DVD, or Blu-Ray? Blu-Ray.
- Best experience going to the movies? The Revenant (2015) was pretty amazing on the big screen.
- Top 5 actors? Ryan Gosling, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robin Williams, Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio. No particular order.
- Top 5 actresses? Keira Knightley, Carey Mulligan, Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams. No particular order.
- Movie you completely regret seeing? Life of Pi (2012).
- Movie you wish was never made? Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002).
- Movie your parent showed you? Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).
- Last movie you watched? Jackie (2016).
- An overrated movie? Inside Out (2015).
- An underrated movie? American Psycho (2000).
- Favourite comedy? In Bruges (2007).

- Movie quote that will always make you laugh? “You’re an inanimate fuckin’ object!” – Ralph Fiennes as Harry in In Bruges (2007).

- Favourite cult film? Fight Club (1999).
- Directors you’d like to see work together? Denis Villeneuve and Nicolas Winding Refn.
- Actors you’d like to see work together? Ryan Gosling and Jake Gyllenhaal.
- Films you wanted to watch, but never got around to watching? So many. Taxi Driver (1976), Memento (2000), and Saving Private Ryan (1998), just to name a few.
- Favourite teen movie? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986).
- Top 5 favourite films? In no particular order; Drive (2011), Se7en (1995), Trainspotting (1996), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and Birdman (2015).
- Favourite superhero film? The Dark Knight (2008) or Watchmen (2009).
- Favourite cop film? End of Watch (2012).
- Favourite road trip film? Little Miss Sunshine (2006).
- A disappointing film from your favorite actor? Ryan Gosling in Only God Forgives (2013).
- A disappointing film from your favourite director? Panic Room (2007) by David Fincher.
- The first movie you ever remember watching in theatres? Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005).
- A movie that was better than the book? Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012).
- Vin Diesel or Bruce Willis? Brucey boy for sure.
- A movie that not many have heard of that you’ve seen? Jagten (2012).
- A movie that changed the way you view the world? Ooh, there’s a few of those. Let’s go with Good Will Hunting (1998).
- Favorite Sci-Fi movie? Alien (1979).
- Movie you completely nerd-out over every time it’s mentioned? Enemy (2013). It’s such a fucking weird film, and it’s very cool to meet someone else who’s seen it.
- Movie that you’ve seen all the behind-the-scenes action for? None, surprisingly. I’ve watched a lot of Red vs. Blue (2003 – Present) with commentary though.
- Movie where your favorite actor was the only good part? The Notebook (2004).
- Movie from an actor you hate that was better than you expected? Edge of Tomorrow (2014). Not normally a big fan of Tom Cruise, but I loved that movie.
- Most visually stunning movie you’ve seen? Probably The Revenant (2015) or Mad Max: Fury Road (2015).
- Favourite genre? That’s a tough one. According to IMDb it’s Mystery/Crime.
- Least favourite genre? Horror. Easy.
- Comedy movie that you didn’t find funny? Juno (2007).
- Horror movie that didn’t scare you? World War Z (2013); though can you really call it Horror?
- Favorite remake of an old movie? I don’t watch a lot of remakes. Scarface (1983) is 34 years old, but it’s a remake of Scarface (1932), so let’s go with that.
- A movie that started a passion for you? The Game (1997). The movie which sparked my love of cinema and made me pursue a Film degree.
- A movie that sparked an interesting conversation? None. I tend to watch movies alone.
- The main movie you remember from your childhood? Toy Story (1995).
- The first movie you saw on it’s opening night? The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). No, I don’t know why.
- A move that made you ache for love. (500) Days of Summer (2009). It’s a heartwarming film that proceeds to repeatedly kick you in the dick.
